As Dunn-Edwards celebrates 100 years of color and innovation, we're looking back at the hues that defined each era of our journey. The Colors of the Decades Collection showcases the defining hues from every decade through 11 unique palettes. Let's explore the quiet beauty of the 1930s, a decade marked by economic hardship and collective strength.
1930s Palette
The 1930s marked a time of financial uncertainty across the country. Amidst the Great Depression, people learned to embrace a simpler life. As society adapted to the changing world, there was a shift toward neutral shades like beige, brown, and gray. With a focus on simplicity and functionality, homes and wardrobes embraced these muted colors, bringing a sense of comfort and stability during a time of hardship.
Even in subdued surroundings, color played a meaningful role. Soft purples were used to symbolize the dream of a better future. As the Dust Bowl swept across the nation, there was an increased awareness of land conservation, sparking a renewed connection to earth. Quiet shades of green gained prominence, reflecting the hope for a more sustainable path forward.
Hollywood's Golden Age during the 30s offered a glamorous escape through entertainment, transporting audiences from their day-to-day worries. Hollywood film sets leaned into the era's iconic Art Deco aesthetic with lavish materials and prominent geometrics, adding to the sense of fantasy for viewers.
The 1930s marked a time of growth and innovation for Dunn-Edwards. In 1937, the company began manufacturing its own paint in its first-ever factory in Los Angeles. And in 1938, industry veteran Arthur C. Edwards joined the company and became a half-owner. Edwards brought with him a strong reputation and deep relationships with painting contractors; his expertise helped shape the company's 100-year legacy.
A tribute to resilience, the 1930s palette is perfect for any space in need of a soothing dose of serene and dreamy colors.
