January Color of the Month: Chill In The Air (DE5911)
01/05/2021 | specs+spaces staff |
Out with the old and in with the New Year. And OH MAN did we ever need a new year! New hopes. New dreams. New possibilities. They all come alive in the brisk breezes of Chill in the Air (DE5911) — a milky, smoky periwinkle paled by sprinkles of snow on a dusky eve. As if its name didn’t already make it a perfect color for January, its icy-purple hue does.
Exploring Winter Color
Last January we were inspired by the drama Mother Nature can bring in the month, naming the statement-making navy blue hue Dark & Stormy (DET572) the January 2020 Color of the Month. But this time around, we went a different direction, taking note of the month’s lightness as well — the way that snow and ice can reflect light and brighten our landscapes with frosted hues and fun pastel shades.
In fact, in the recent past we’ve been inspired by winter sunsets and sunrises, taking cues from the icy pastel shades cast in early mornings, evenings, and dusky twilights. Winter light illuminates a unique color palette often reflected off the white glow of a fresh blanket of snow, dappled through the pines, or diligently trying to poke through heavy gray cloud cover.
As a frosted periwinkle, Chill in the Air is the kind of color that would fit right in with our 2021 trend and color report Hanabi, one that emphasizes a light-hearted palette filled with playful delicate shades of blue, yellow, green and purple; a color story which takes it inspirations from light and fire in the sky.
Designing with Icy Hues
- Chill in the Air is a wonderful shade option for a bedroom, right for people of all ages with its quiet, light and restful quality. To create a mature and upscale look in the bedroom with this light hued purple, mix in worldly inspiration: a chinoiserie dresser, brass or gold hardware and accents, art influenced by Monet’s waterlilies that filled his gardens in Giverny, and layer it all with varied textures to add depth and sophistication to his light tone. Find out how to build a room around light purple here.
- Paint a living room or study with Chill in the Air, and allow for light to bounce around the space while also adding color personality to a room over a more typical neutral gray or white.
- In a powder room pair Chill in the Air with a pink-toned wallpaper on the ceiling for a fun and unforgettable small space.
- For a complete look, pair the refined Chill in the Air with complementary colors Antique Paper (DE6218) and Porous Stone (DE6220) for a truly magical winter’s tale.
- Experiment with another recent Color of the Month, Berry Frost, for an icy pink expression of color that unexpectedly delights in functional rooms like mudrooms, laundry rooms and garages.
