As Dunn-Edwards celebrates 100 years of color and innovation, we're looking back at the hues of the century. The Colors of the Decades Collection showcases the stand-out shades from each of our eras through 11 unique palettes. Today is the final palette reveal, and we're stepping into the 1970s—a decade where the rebellious energy of the 60s mellowed into a search for inner peace and comfortability.
1970s Palette
The 1970s shifted people's focus inward. Naturally, this brought earthier tones and eclectic styles to the spotlight, reflecting the growing interest in individuality and a slower, more intentional way of living.
Interior designed started leaning toward warmth, comfort, and lived-in spaces. Overstuffed couches, leafy houseplants, and deep neutrals—like Old Boot (DE6133)—created a sense of calm and connection to nature.
It was during the 70s that Bohemian style rose to popularity. Incorporating rattan furniture, fringe rugs, and handmade textiles, the Boho trend welcomes various cultures into design. At the same time, disco culture was thriving, and it left its impact on interiors with plush shag carpets, velvet upholstery, and open layouts designed for entertaining.
Also known as the "Me Decade," the 1970s encouraged self-expression and individuality. High inflation and prominent unemployment pushed more women into the workforce, sparking a shift in fashion. Women moved away from pastels and florals and toward pantsuits, blazers, and natural hues.
The 1970s oil crisis and growing environmental awareness pushed architects to incorporate energy-efficient solutions. More homes were built with passive solar design, natural ventilation, and sustainable building techniques.
Dunn-Edwards had a strong start to the decade in 1971 when company leader Arthur Edwards was featured on the cover of Western Paint Industry magazine in an article titled Arthur Edwards: The Man Behind Dunn-Edwards' Success Story. Later in 1974, the company expanded manufacturing to Arizona, opening a 32,000-square-foot facility in Tempe and ensuring we could serve our growing customer base across the Southwest.
The 1975 Palette represents a decade of calm energy and encouraged self-expression. From the calm of Friar Tuck (DEC714) to the energy of Sunny Disposition (DET481), these colors allow us to step back into the 70s as if we never left.
