Axiom Desert House by Turkel Design — The Reimagined, Mid-century Prefab
05/06/2019 | Sara McLean |
Drawing on the lifestyle and culture of Palm Springs desert living, the Axiom Desert House by Turkel Design is a Mid-century-inspired, systems-built jewel that is the private residence of designers Joel and Meelena Turkel, as well as a “living lab” for design professionals, students and general enthusiasts. The home is a testament to modern prefab, celebrating desert design that is simple, elegant and replicable. As part of the recent Modernism Week home tours, when attendees stepped inside the transformative, net-zero-energy home, they witnessed a creative ecosystem that is a fusion of process and true collaboration.
This 2,110-square-foot modern prefab was designed as a way for the founders of Turkel Design to dive deeply into the design, building, and delivery process for prefab homes. With more than a decade of experience designing state-of-the-art prefab architecture, the Turkels felt Palm Springs was the perfect location for building their dream home using the knowledge they gained over time.
The indoor/outdoor lifestyle is highlighted by a private outdoor lanai and swimming pool through sliding glass windows — showcasing the Palm Springs sun-and-swim lifestyle. Mid-century modern furnishings create cozy spaces with maximum flexibility for living, working, playing and entertaining family and friends. Take a 3-D tour of the home here!
Dunn-Edwards was the exclusive paint sponsor and — with a palette of soft, tinted watery blues paired with whites — the hues blend seamlessly among the other architecture and design elements.
The journey for Turkel Design is a testament to how a focus on specific design principals and outcomes can have a positive impact on the neighborhood. See here how they began their path to completing the Axiom Desert House:
