A Brief History of Deep Purple

Purple is created when red, blue, or violet light mix. While you can learn more about the various color systems here, what’s clear is that purples are exotic as they occur relatively rarely in nature. Thus the color purple carries with it an air of mystery and prestige—a sensibility that is echoed in purple’s place in history and cultural applications. While purple is purported to first have been used in the Neolithic era, it has over the course of history been a notoriously difficult color to produce. In fact, merchants in the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre harvested purple dye from just one type of sea snail. As a result, producing purple was tremendously expensive, and therefore purple fabrics were accessible to only the most wealthy in society.

In Japan and China, historically the purple gromwell plant was used to produce purple dyes for luxury textiles. The process of extracting the purple dye from the plant’s roots, including the collection and drying of the plants, was also an incredibly lengthy process. As a result, creating a high price tag for purple garments.

Early in the 20th century, purple took on meaning as a color of women’s suffrage. Along with symbolic colors of white and gold, the color purple became a signature color of the fight for women's voting rights, as a color that embodied loyalty and steadfastness to the cause.
