City Stroll Hotel Focus: Shoreline Hotel Waikiki

Continuing with our Color Trends 2019, we are focusing on designs that explore the color and design of the "City Stroll" Trend. Architects are designing "urban oases" within our cities, sanctuaries celebrating bold colors and experimental geometries. Designers strive for a sort of pseudo-realism and artificiality, pushing the boundaries of form.

What better way to complement Hawaii’s stunning landscape than with equally beautiful interiors? Waikiki’s new Shoreline Hotel, designed by BHDM, does just that. Located a stone’s throw from Honolulu’s famous beach, the hotel’s neon, bold shades echo the island’s tropical flora and fauna and has been dubbed “the most instagrammable hotel in Hawaii."

To make Shoreline’s interior photo-friendly, the team — led by designer Dan Mazzarini — chose furniture and fabrics in a mix of the brightest colors possible. Combined with tropical prints and ombre murals, the clashing colors follow a theme that the studio described as “nature meets neon."

Starting in the reception area, a hot-pink carpet and paneled wall are accompanied by a neon sign that spells out the Hawaiian greeting "aloha." The same flooring continues into a lounge area, where furniture is upholstered in yellow, teal, blue and red. White cages hanging from the ceiling provide homes for paper models of native birds. At night, these fixtures are revealed as neon lights that turn the room pink and purple.

The bedrooms are decorated in pink, teal or blue, with combinations of other colors used for custom bedspreads, carpets, furniture and accessories. On bright feature walls behind the beds, topographic models of the Hawaiian archipelago provide a map that points out “you are here," written in Mazzarini’s handwriting.

Hints of color also highlight in the white bathrooms, like the metal towel rails that match the “aloha” sign in reception.

A pool deck on the roof is enlivened by a mural painted by California-based artist DJ Neff, creating a colorful poolside experience with sweeping city and beach views.

Come sunset, the hotel turns on neon lights that place visitors in the middle of an eternal sunset. The inspiration came from the colors Mazzarini saw during his first few trips to the island and has become the hotel's signature look, glowing like a luminous glass box from down the street.
