Sojourn Hotel Focus: Phum Baitang

Design Trends

Continuing with our Color Trends 2019, we are focusing on designs that explore the color and design of the "Sojourn" trend. Social Architecture is the conscious designing of physical space to optimize human interactions and connection to its surroundings. Designers that utilize the "Sojourn" trend feature local materials throughout the interiors, and embrace urban agriculture, sustainability and reuse. Floor plans and furniture layouts garner community and social interaction, while natural hues, including pale pinks, olives, browns and rich greens, rustic textures and graphic motifs populate interiors.

resort exterior

Khmer for “green village," Phum Baitang is an elegant hideaway wrapped in eight acres of lush gardens and paddy fields near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The hotel is a collection of stilted huts built with thatch, rattan and clay tiles, which closely resemble the homes of rice farmers. These 45 spacious, stilted wooden villas form a village-like cluster inspired by traditional design and complemented by local modes of transportation, such as tuk-tuks.

Using the wisdom of traditional construction techniques, the villas stand on stilts to protect from floods and to allow for storage and optimum ventilation. And at the center of the property, an existing ancient farmhouse has been converted into a lounge and furnished with rattan wing chairs and plush carpets.

Pieces of handmade furniture, such as the carved-wood headboards and lime-finished freestanding wooden baths in the villas, blend seamlessly with antiques picked from local markets. An earthy palette gives the rooms a light, breezy air.

A tranquil spa temple, yoga pavilion and an outdoor pool with bar are provided at this ultimate luxury retreat. And the hotel’s Bay Phsar restaurant has a local market feel where guests can pick their own fresh ingredients and spices, and where the rice comes from the surrounding paddy fields.

The spa temple, as it is appropriately named, reflects the stone carvings of its renowned neighbors in Angkor Wat. The seven treatment rooms, relaxation area, sauna, and yoga pavilion are laced with green spaces and open areas.
