Playtime Trend in Focus: TTC Elite Saigon Kindergarten

Design Trends

Dunn-Edward’s 2020 Design Trend Playtime captures the enjoyment and immersion in the experience of NOW. Fun and adventure are at the forefront of this youthful trend, with rules of form, function and color tossed aside. Minimalism is rejected in favor of difference, amusement and individuality. Interesting textures and clashing patterns are embraced, while color is vivid and playful like a rainbow.

This trend is well represented in TTC Elite Saigon Kindergarten, by Kientruc O architects, with its whimsical facade decorated with colorful patterns and irregularly shaped windows. Located in Ho Chi Minh City, the kindergarten is meant to be a full-sized playhouse for children, provoking a sense of curiosity for the kids as they interact with it on a daily basis.

While the layout of the windows seems random, it has been systematically calculated to ensure adequate natural daylight and ventilation when in use. These openings allow children to peer outward — stimulating imagination and curiosity — and establishing a direct relationship between the interior playspace and the living, ever-changing exterior environment.

The glazed entrance of the kindergarten and windows directly above it are framed in a swooping arch that defines the front of the facade. Deep sills turn the window bays into places to read, play or perform, while preventing the rooms from overheating. Colors include fluoride pink and peroxide yellows, as well as bright blue and orange.

In a holistic view, the architecture suggests a cubist geometry, reflecting those of the neighboring housing blocks. With this sensitivity to the surrounding context, the kindergarten brings a fresh and lively quality to the urban grid.
