Happy Anniversary! Pasadena Showcase Celebrates 50 Years

Design Trends

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. As one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts committee is ready to open this year's tour on April 13, 2014. On view through May 11, the selected English Arts and Crafts home is a historical jewel in the Arroyo area of Pasadena.

History of the Home

As one of the oldest historic homes in Pasadena, the English estate was built by architect Stiles O. Clements for Robert Philip Flint and his wife Margaret Gray Flint. Completed in 1915 and sitting on 3.5 acres, the 8,200-square-foot estate features seven bedrooms, 10 baths, five fireplaces, oak flooring, redwood wall paneling and floor-to-ceiling leaded glass windows. The exterior of the site includes a rose garden, pool, bath house, tennis and badminton court, green house and gardener's potting shed as well as a chauffer's suite above the garage.

History of the Architect

Stiles O. Clements was the architect of the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles and the Beverly Hills High School swim-gym, featured in It's a Wonderful Life. Clements also designed many other public and private establishments throughout Los Angeles and even assisted Julia H. Morgan on the Hearst Castle estate in San Simeon, California.
