Santa Cruz Church Tower
Tucson resident Keith Dougall started Desert View Painting, Inc. in the early 1970s. Now, with over 50 years in business, his sons Chris and Ed run the company and have expanded it to take on out-of-state work as well. The commercial painting contractor enjoys a long relationship with Dunn-Edwards, stretching back to the 1980s. That relationship has paid off lately, particularly because of the manufacturer’s quality products, and ability to supply the spec’d coating for a job and deliver it on time.

“It doesn’t matter who you’re dealing with, when you commit to a project, you better be able to supply that project and I have to say, I don’t have any issue with Dunn-Edwards,” Ed Dougall said. This benefit contributed to the success of a May 2022 project involving a unique historic downtown Tucson structure, the Santa Cruz Church. The exterior tower repaint was slated to require two to three weeks but was turned around in just 10 days, despite challenges.
The Santa Cruz Church was built in the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style between 1916 and 1918. The church’s tower, seen prominently from the street and surrounding area, needed serious attention. Its mud-adobe brick surface had considerable paint peel, Dougall said. Desert View was asked to bid on the project, along with other contractors. But competitors backed out because of equipment and site access limitations.

Determined to get the job done, Dougall estimated he needed a 150′ boom lift, but a 185′ lift was the only one available. The job required barricade permits from the city because the lift would occupy three lanes of an adjacent street. The city quickly complied, and Desert View’s four-man crew persevered. They pressure washed and scraped the tower walls, applied two coats of a custom formulated elastomeric primer, and then two coat of EVERSHIELD® Ultra-Premium Exterior Flat Paint in white
