As Dunn-Edwards celebrates 100 years of color and innovation, we’re looking back at the shades that define each era of our history. The Colors of the Decades Collection highlights the top hues from each decade through 11 unique color palettes. Let’s step back into the adventurous spirit and deep reflections of the 1990s—a time of change, expression, and transition into the digital age.
1990s Palette
The 1990s were a decade of shifting moods and big questions about the future. Global events like the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War inspired hope yet also brought uncertainty. Economic ups and downs and social awareness ushered in a more serious tone, echoed in the rich jewel tones and dark neutrals that filled homes, wardrobes, and city streets.
Music and media were at the center of the decade. The rise of grunge and alternative bands inspired people to embrace deeper, moodier shades. Music lovers also embraced the Walkman, a portable tape player, which allowed them to curate their own soundtracks and experience music in a highly personal way. This spirit of individuality spilled into design too: people became more daring with color, choosing hues that matched their own vibe instead of following one-size-fits-all trends.
As urban living boomed, industrial lofts and city apartments layered raw textures with cold colors. Hit TV show Friends, based in New York City, made vibrant interiors—like Monica’s iconic purple apartment—a must-have for many.
At the same time, bright blues were frequently used in design, mirroring the rise of the tech age and the fast-approaching new millennium. Teal was a frontrunner, blending well with shades of plum and sunflower yellow for a palette that encouraged people to let go and have fun even during serious times. Conversations around sustainability were bubbling up to the surface. Homeowners and builders rediscovered natural materials and more earth-conscious choices, laying the groundwork for greener living.
As for Dunn-Edwards, the 1990s were a decade of resilience and groundbreaking progress. In 1994, the Northridge Earthquake rocked Southern California, impacting several of our stores—including the Mission Hills location—but thankfully, none sustained structural damage. Just one year later, we launched SIERRA®, our first low-odor, zero-VOC paint, leading the way in eco-friendly innovation. And in 1998, we introduced the United States’ first Slurry Plant for paint manufacturing—a revolutionary process we still use today.
This decade marked an exciting time in history, and its colors are still here to back it up. The 1990s Palette features the decade’s iconic hues, complete with bold colors like Putnam Plum (DEA100) and Aquatic (DEA134) to keep the adventurous spirit of the 90s alive.
