A History Of Orange-Red
The term vermilion comes from French, and originated because of the brilliant orange-red color similar to a popular natural red dye made throughout Europe from an insect called Kermes vermilio. Dunn-Edwards’ Vermilion paint color is influenced by the color, color family, and pigment most often derived, from antiquity through the 19th-century, from the powdered mineral cinnabar.
In fact, cinnabar’s orange-red color has been important to cultures and empires throughout history, from Maya civilizations who used it in royal burial chambers, to ancient Chinese dynasties, among others. In fact, western symbology expert and author of Red: The History of A Color, Michel Pastoureau, notes that frescoes made from rich red cinnabar graced many Pompeiian houses communicating luxury to those who visited.
