Las Vegas Market Winter 2014

Design Trends

Recently, designers and buyers descended on Las Vegas to attend one of the premier buying events of the season, Las Vegas Market at World Market Center. Las Vegas Market is the only major home furnishings and gift market in the western U.S. and -- with record attendance and a renewed optimism in the design industry -- thousands of new product offerings and educational seminars highlighted several key trends that came to the forefront at the winter show.

Highlights and Trends in Home Furnishings Market

Tabletop: Influenced by the artisanal menu trends at restaurants, tableware is pushing toward a refined, rustic look. From organic shapes, solid colored or speckled pottery to glazed earthenware and handcrafted to vintage-inspired, this trend also continues to highlight flatware with oxidized finishes. There is also a trend toward casual luxury as gold is becoming less formal in table settings. In color, the palettes are open to interpretation as personalization and individual tastes become an important element to design.

Housewares: The influence of healthy cooking and eating provides the housewares collections ample opportunity to showcase the latest gastronomic crazes such as European sous-vide cookers and juicers.

Textiles: Designer licensing continues to be the major focus of this industry, as designers continue to make their mark, providing their namesake to various textile lines.

Floor covering: A continued love of leather, from rustic to urban settings, was portrayed at the show. Key trends in leather flooring are a mix of leathers with other materials such as jute or denim, patchwork patterns that imitate tile work, color that leans toward grayer hues or infuses more color instead of the traditional brown, and cleaner more sophisticated looks for the urban downtown markets.

Lighting: Advancements in LED technology and the phasing out of incandescent lighting options are giving designers opportunities and freedom to design outside the traditional lighting boundaries. As lighting is becoming recognized more as a focal point in interiors, designers are looking to outside influences, such as the car industry, for inspiration.

Smaller scale: Introductions of smaller-scaled furnishings and house wares are continuing to uptrend. With cleaner lines and smaller footprints, they allow for better design in the smaller homes and lofts of today.

Outdoor lifestyle: The outside continues to gain importance as homeowners are paying more attention to what's beyond their walls. Patio heating, such as fire pits and patio heaters, continue to trend as use of the outside patio is continuing into the cooler weather of fall. Durability is vital to outdoor products, with weather-, stain- and fade-resistance properties fundamental to success. Versatility of product is also important and more designs are providing indoor and outdoor use guides. Outdoor rooms created with tents and pavilions as well as outdoor window treatments provide privacy and separate rooms for entertaining.
