January Color of the Month: Dark & Stormy
01/08/2020 | specs+spaces staff |
Welcome to 2020! The first color of the new decade we’re highlighting is Dark & Stormy (DET572) as January’s Color of the Month. This color (so aptly named for this time of year) references the darkest of rain clouds in a mountain winter storm, not quite black, not quite purple or gray, but a mix of all those shades. Yet, this dramatic color contrasts against light shades so well, just like fresh snow against a dark sky, creating a classic, crisp and fresh look, which is perfectly fitting for a new slate in a New Year.
Rich Color Fit for Layering
When it comes to designing, January's Color of the Month, Dark & Stormy, lends itself to layering with different greys and whites. Have fun playing with a spectrum of dark to light in textiles and gallery pieces, as in the study showcased above. Here, medium grey silk chair pillows and and a light grey and white portrait add visual richness and drama to the room. The trend away from all things white reveals something so satisfying letting a dark color build a room’s personality. And as we’ve mentioned in previous posts, embracing rich, dark color is a major design trend in 2020, so bust out the Dark & Stormy and go for decadent contrast!
This particular paint color lends itself to a masculine or feminine aesthetic, and can be transformed based on the types of textiles and accents paired with it. Want to add a more romantic, playful sensibility to a space with January’s Color of the Month? Rich golds metals and dark magenta accents would pair perfectly with the bluish-grey hints of Dark & Story. Alternatively, a dose of a Goldenlock (DEA121) inspired hues in a rugs, accessories or an accent wall, would enliven the space while maintaining its overall neutrality.
We know that this January 2019 Color of the Month shines the most when it’s contrasting light greys and whites. If you need some help figuring out the light shades you’d like to combine with Dark & Stormy, start by scoping out our selection of whites, including our 10 new high hide whites like Be Cool (DEHW09) or Icy White (DEHW10). A cool white that’s snowy and bright, Icy White’s slight grey hues make it a wonderful compliment Dark & Stormy’s tempestuous tones.
