I Madonnari, an Italian street painting festival, was brought to life Memorial Day weekend in Santa Barbara on the steps and grounds of the Santa Barbara Mission. Madonnari, known in America as street painters, transformed the area using chalk pastels to create 150 colorfully artistic images.
These street painters get on their hands and knees, working long hours over the course of the weekend, to create these colorful masterpieces using chalk. While spectators walked leisurely throughout the
Mission grounds, these artwork changed hourly as artists continued to finish their creations.
As an Italian tradition since the 16
th century, I Madonnari has been part of the Santa Barbara culture for more than 28 years. The festival supports the Children's Creative Project, a nonprofit arts education program of the Santa Barbara Education Office.
